My background didn't change

A checklist for when Pick Background doesn't apply the background you expected in Google Meet.

Start with what the Pick Background badge in the bottom right of the Google Meet preview screen says. Each section below matches one of the things you might see.

There's no badge at all

  • The badge only appears on the preview screen, before you click Join now. Pick Background doesn't change backgrounds once you're in the call.
  • Give it a few seconds. Google Meet can take a while to finish loading the preview while your camera starts.
  • Refresh the Google Meet tab.
  • Check that the extension is turned on at chrome://extensions. Pick Background runs in desktop Chrome only, not on phones or tablets.

"Sign in via the extension icon"

Click the Pick Background icon in Chrome's toolbar and choose Sign in with Google. If you don't see the icon, click the puzzle piece and pin it.

"No rule for this meeting"

  • Compare your rule with the meeting title exactly as it appears on the preview screen. Rules don't care about upper and lower case, but spelling and spacing count.
  • If the meeting has no title, the rule has to match the meeting code. See meetings without a title.
  • For regex rules, check the pattern. An invalid regex never matches. See Rule examples.

The badge says "Applied" but the background is wrong

  • Look at which rule the badge names. If more than one rule matches a meeting, the one you created first wins.
  • If the background in the rule is no longer in Google Meet's picker, for example an uploaded image you removed, Pick Background can't select it. Delete the rule and create it again with a background that's there now.

The meeting is open in a background tab

Google Meet doesn't load its backgrounds panel while the tab is hidden, so Pick Background waits until you switch to the Meet tab and applies the background then.

You can't save another rule

The Free plan includes one rule and one default background. When you try to save a second rule, Pick Background offers an upgrade to Pro or Lifetime, and saves the rule once the upgrade goes through.
